I have talked to several people who own 1978 Corvettes and have found I am not the only one to get a chattering noise from the rear end. This past weekend I talked to a friend who bought a Corvette new in 77 and had the same problem when it was new. He said sometime in 77 they switched from a whale oil lubricant in the rear differential to some sort of synthetic lube. Apparently it does not do as good of a job getting in between the plate in the diff. He took his car into the shop and had the fluid switched to the earlier style and never has a problem again. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of a similar story? I am hopping to do some more research soon on the proper lubricant for this application.

Does any one know of good sources for OEM parts for 78 pace cars? I get a lot of questions through the year about finding original tires or T-tops. If you know of good places to find old stuff lets hear about it!

The story I have gotten about this car from people at gm is that it is the usac car and when gm got it back it was loaned to a technical college for teaching students. The car has been rebuilt several times and somewhere along the way the vin was removed. Since they could not identify the car for sure they couldn't spend the money to restore it.

Thanks for the info. I am surprised they sold this car as I had tried to buy it several years ago, shortly after they reacquired it. The car was in rough shape then but they felt it was car number 4. Another story I have heard is it was they prototype car for the pace car edition. Hard to tell for sure.

Just received a check in the mail from Corvette Quarterly telling me they will not publish the next two issues. Kinda wonder if they will keep the magazine going with all the cutbacks at GM. Did anyone else get a refund or heard what is going on with the magazine? I hope to try to contact them this week and find out more.
